Pinch Valve

Sand Blasting Machine Pinch Valve Assembly

Pinch Valve assembly use din sand blasting machine to regulate the flow of media(corrosive, angular, granular). It uses pressurized air or a mechanical mechanism to open and close the valve. It uses a flexible inner rubber sleeve inside the valve which keeps the media isolated. These are used with slurries and granular products like sand, shots, grits, etc. The outer body of the pinch valve is made up of cast iron by the casting method. So it is the simplest valve design with an elastomer that can be pinched to cut flow using a mechanism of fluid pressure for media for various purposes.

Pinch Valve Working in Sand Blasting Machine

The pinch valve has three major components of its working: a housing(outer body), internal rubber sleeve, and end connectors. The rubber sleeve is the only component that comes in contact with the media and is fitted into housing from inlet to outlet. The end connections are bolted at each end to provide support and connection to the valve. The valve is open in normal condition(unpressurized), but when the pressurized air is coming in the valve, it pushes down the rubber sleeve and creates a pinching effect. When the rubber sleeve is completely pinched, the flow is obstructed and the valve is closed. When media strikes the rubber sleeve, it works as an absorbent to impact and gives it a longer service life than the metal surfaces.

Pinch valve is used in portable sand blasting machine. It is fitted under the hopper in which media is stored. The mixture of media and air comes in one end of the pinch valve from the hopper and further another end is connected with mixing tube in which one side intake of air from filter regulator and the other side is the output of mixture of media and air with high pressure goes to the hose pipe and then to sandblasting nozzle.

Pinch Valve Assembly Selection Criteria

  1. Material- For easy handling body material should be lightweight. We should take careful consideration in selecting rubber sleeves as it is the only part that comes in contact with the blasting media. Its material may include natural rubber, NBR, ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM), silicon, food quality rubber. The material should have good abrasion resistance to overcome the damage.
  2. Pressure- To prevent a failure to open up or close up the valve the pressure valves should be taken into account.
  3. The mechanical mechanism to open and close the valve does not require any pressure or air system to operate. There is a threaded rod that moves up and down on internal threading in the body of the pinch valve assembly.

Pinch Valve Advantages

  1. Mostly use for abrasive and corrosion media.
  2. It gives a straight path to media that means no obstruction.
  3. Low Turbulence and friction.
  4. Easy replacement of rubber sleeves.
  5. Opening and closing time is fast.

Pinch Valve Disadvantages

  1. Not Suitable for high-temperature applications due to its elastomeric property.
  2. A high-pressure differential can cause the rubber sleeve to deform or collapse so that valve cannot open fully.
  3. Not suitable for vacuum applications as suction inside the sleeve results in collapse of the sleeve.

Pinch Valve Applications

  1. Plastic industry
  2. Chemical industry
  3. Cement industry
  4. Bulk and solid handling industry
  5. Ceramic industry
  6. Wastewater industry
  7. Food and beverage industries
  8. Pharmaceutical industry
